Save the X1000

So after 5 years of faithful service, my X1000 Compaq notebook has pooped out.  I went to restart it and it shut down like it always does, then the poor guy just never came back on.  When plugged in, the green charging light comes on for the battery, but when the power buttom is pressed, it shows no signs of life.  I’m going to make one last attempt tonight to save it by going to Radio Shack to buy a small battery that’s going in the back of the computer.  This battery is apparently responsible for the BIOS, which thanks to Wikipedia I now know is responsible for identifying and initiating the component hardware.  All very fascinating, I know.  I’m hoping this isn’t just a pipe dream, as I’d really like to avoid buying a new computer.

On a positive note, I now know why Radio Shack exists.
